Why is it a good smart business decision to use social media?
There are many, but some top reasons include:
- It is another marketing tool
You want new people to find out about you and your business. Many of your potential clients use social media to interact with others. When they visit your websites and social media sites where you are present, you are receiving “traffic” and exposure.
Not only will they find out and learn about you, but it gives you an opportunity to build trust with them so that they see you as the expert in your field.
They will also share your content and website, allowing even more people to find you! All of this can help you increase the growth of your business.
- Social media provides social proof to your audience
Similar to the first point, when people want to purchase goods or services, it is common for them to turn to the internet for advice and reviews. If your business is found in social media circles, it results in increased consumer confidence.
- Your competition is using social media
You don’t want to be left in the dark, and lose business to those who are marketing themselves wisely using social media.
- It is free
There is no cost to create your own social profile. However, if you want, you can spend more for targeted ads (Facebook, for example), or for more connection opportunities (LinkedIn, for example).
- You can rank higher in search engines such as Google
Without getting into too many technical details, here is a bit of an explanation.
Search engines (such as Google) are how we find things we are searching for online. Often, we don’t look past the first page of a search engine, so people with websites want to focus on some search engine optimization (SEO) techniques.
In the past, search engines would rate websites through inbound links and keywords. The more links to a website and keywords, the higher your website ranked in search engines, thus making it easier for people to find your website. The idea was that this indicated how popular your site was. People used to cheat in order to get their websites ranked higher by buying links, and overusing keywords. However, this resulted in a lot of junky sites showing up in top search engine rankings, and a poor experience for people using search engines.
Fortunately, things have improved. Search engines now rank your site’s popularity using social media. Your interaction and content in social media is what search engines now see as important, thereby raising your presence in the rankings.
Another thing to consider is that Google (a search engine) owns Google+ and YouTube. Doesn’t it seem that having active Google+ and YouTube accounts would mean favorable search results in Google?
